Wandering Our Way

The long-awaited arrival of what we affectionally call another set of “Our Kids” happened at the end of February. Steve and Raena are here! Safely tucked in the sideyard, we are enjoying every moment of having them here. They were able to visit with Travis before he left to head back to New Orleans, and the soothing sound of their music fills the air not just here at the house, but after hikes, and at the venues, they have been able to book since arriving.

So far we have hit the trails at Mescal and Dead Horse and watched them spread joy with their music at the 10/12 Lounge, That Brewery, and the Copper Jackalope. Missed their gig at PJ’s up in The Village, but they have booked them for two more. And every new booking just puts a smile on our faces as it means they will be staying longer.

They are following their dreams wandering around the country in the home they call “Tiny”, growing their following for their YouTube and Spotify channels, and working on new original material. What a treat for us to be a stop on their journey.

Afternoon at Dead Horse

Luck was with us on our second attempt to see the majestic Bald Eagle that takes up residence in the large old cottonwood trees at Dead Horse State Park. I had done a loop around lagoon#2 with him nowhere in sight, but the puffy white clouds and reflections in the lagoons were treats enough. We decided to load up and make our way to see the Verde River, and its raging waters right now from all the storms, when out of the corner of my eye I spotted him up in his favorite tree. Jumped out of the car, and quietly followed the trail that took us directly under the tree- camera ready in case he flew away, but he was staying put, and Steve and Raena got to see their first Bald Eagle in the wild. Such an exciting moment. Added bonus, a Great Blue Heron was perched in a tree opposite him. We are so very fortunate to have this treasure of a park just a few miles down the road. With miles of easy to difficult hiking and biking trails and three lagoons to enjoy a leisurely stroll, it is always a beautiful day at Dead Horse.

Getting Closer

It’s always a great time when our kids come to visit. But what is even better, is the thought of them coming here to live. Over the past year or so, since they purchased their property, we have anxiously awaited the day that they will make Clarkdale their home. The plans came a little bit closer this past week when Travis was here to start mapping out the property where the shop and houses will go. Bob and he spent many hours over on their two acres figuring out and measuring where the septic would go, what the easements and setbacks were, and how everything was going to fit to take advantage of the amazing views of the red rocks of Sycamore Canyon and Sedona to the east, and Mingus Mountain and Jerome to the west. Everything is starting to come together, and we can’t wait till we can ring them up and say, “Hey, what’s for dinner” or “Want to take a hike this afternoon”.

Misfits Ride Again / Sycamore Cabin

The day we were here, they were in the process of remodeling the cabin, but when it is done you can rent it through Recreation.gov. for $125.00 a night!!! Sleeps 6, talk about night skies!!

Some info from their site:
Constructed by the CCC in 1938, this historic ranger’s residence sits on the edge of Sycamore Creek, providing an opportunity to explore a unique riparian area just outside the back door.  Enjoy serenity, spectacular views, hiking trails—including part of the Great Western Trail—and time "away from it all."  At an elevation of 4000 feet, Sycamore Cabin enjoys a moderate climate and temperatures year-round.  Corrals, a water trough, and proximity to Pine Mountain Wilderness make this a favored vacation destination for horse riders.
